December 2018

Highfield WI

December 2018 members’ meeting

Monday 17.12.18.

38 ladies, including 5 visitors joined us for our December meeting.  No-one from Bassett WI was able to join us though Pam Chaundy sent apologies and good wishes to us all.

Julia welcomed everyone and explained that our entertainment for the evening – the Ukofonics would play a 20 minutes set, then all of us would help ourselves to food and mulled wine and then the Ukofonics would resume their set to bring the evening to a close.

Cath gave out some notices;

  • Thanks to all for their generous and beautifully wrapped presents for the Refuge, also the delicious savoury donations to this evening’s shared buffet.

  • She reminded members that 2019 subs would be due in January, that these had gone up to £42 and could be paid by bank transfer or cheque made out to Highfield WI.

  • She urged members to collect one of the pink 2019 Programmes from the Information table and noted that the January meeting will be an active one – as usual, to get some of the Christmas calories shifted!  This will be run by Vanessa Beecham from ‘Fit Steps’, an exercise class inspired by Strictly Come Dancing.

  • Finally, she asked members who had ordered one, to collect and pay for the Centenary tea-towels still awaiting collection.

The Ukofonics then took to the floor with a collection of songs old and new.  During the break members of the band and the rest of us enjoyed a fantastic array of savoury treats, accompanied with mulled wine.  Further raffle monies were collected and 4 prize winners drawn to receive either a poinsetta, bottle of Prosecco, tub of Quality Street or earrings.  Clare & Julia then cut and distributed our special ‘100 sweetie cake’ to commemorate 100 years of the Hampshire Federation.  Julia had baked the 3 different flavoured cakes and Clare had helped her decorate them with an amazing collection of mini sweets and biscuits.  The end product looked fantastic and members queued up to admire and then eat it!

The evening came to a close around 10pm with the second part of the set from Ukofonics, including a rendition of the Twelve Days of Christmas with plenty of audience participation! Amid much applause, Julia thanked them for coming along to entertain us once again.
