Monday 22th October 2018, 8-10pm

17 members and 2? visitors joined us on an autumnal Monday evening for our October members’ get-together.

Clare welcomed everyone and then gave some updates. She mentioned the Autumn HamWIc meeting. Helen Simmonds attended and said the speaker was excellent and that she had very much enjoyed it. Clare inquired as to whether She mentioned the upcoming Spring meeting was to be held on Thursday March 8th, 7.30pm at Shirley Baptist church.  The subject is Women’s Health.  All welcome.  She then asked the members if they were happy with the handling of DPMR information. Members will be asked to sign a sheet at a future meeting to agree. Clare asked (as a member not as a Co- President) if given that subs were going up to £41 (an increase of nearly 25% over seven years), if they had thought about leaving the WI and forming an independent group. Surprisingly quite a few members thought it was worthy of consideration.

Cath was away (and missed) so not many notices passed on.

Clare then introduced our speaker for the evening, Professor Norman Maclean. He spoke about the origins of Humankind. This was as usual, a fascinating talk and much enjoyed. He presented an array of slides demonstrating how humankind had migrated around the globe and the interaction of the various hominoids. Members were particularly fascinated by all the artefacts which Norman brought along. We had the privilege of handing some extremely old relics (stone age, bronze age and beaker people). We are grateful to Norman for trusting us enough not to drop some of fragile pieces!

Julia then presented Norman with a bottle of wine, and we continued the meeting with a glass of wine, and gentle chatter. The meeting came to an end after questions and wine and savoury nibbles.
